baltic sea
80 years ago, a WWII B-17 bomber crashed in the Baltic. Scientists are finally learning who was onboard.
Scientists are finally learning who was onboard. Preserved machine guns may finally reveal the names of the lost Flying Fortress crew. The B-17 bomber was specifically designed for high altitude, long distance missions. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. A team of marine archaeologists is one step closer to identifying an Air Force crew who lost their lives aboard a B-17 bomber amid the height of World War II .

Sunken WWII bombs make a surprising home for sea life
A new study finds algae, mussels, and starfish flock to munitions dumped in the Baltic Sea. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. As the ink dried on Germany's unconditional surrender on May 8, 1945, celebrations erupted across the world. People cheered, wept, and kissed in the streets as World War II finally came to an end in Europe. A few months later at the Potsdam Conference, Germany agreed to demilitarize and dismantle its once formidable army, leaving the nation with lots and lots of leftover munitions.

Poland briefly closes airspace as NATO increases presence in the Baltic Sea
Can Ukraine restore its pre-war borders? Is Russia testing NATO with aerial incursions in Europe? Poland has briefly closed part of its airspace southeast of capital Warsaw, citing "unplanned military activity", as Russia launches a new wave of strikes against Ukraine. The deployment on Sunday of Polish and allied aircraft in the country's airspace comes as the transatlantic security bloc NATO announced that it is upgrading its mission in the Baltic Sea in response to drone incursions in Denmark and reported drone sightings in Norway. In the latest incident, the Polish armed forces said it scrambled aircraft to ensure the security of its airspace after Russia launched strikes on Ukraine.

International underwater cable attacks by Russia, China are no 'mere coincidence' warns EU's top diplomat
Attacks on underwater cables running through strategically significant bodies of water in both the Baltic Sea and the South China Sea by Russia and China, respectively, in recent months has top officials concerned they are not "mere coincidence." Maritime sabotage efforts in both regions of the world appear to have been on the rise over the last several years, with a notable spike in recent months after at least three separate attacks occurred in as many months, beginning in November, and the top suspects are Russia and China. "The Kremlin has been running a hybrid campaign against Europe for years, ranging from spreading disinformation and cyberattacks to weaponizing energy supplies. Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, these efforts have intensified dramatically," EU High Representative Kaja Kallas told Fox News Digital. "However, Russia is not the only challenge we face."

Russian fighter aircraft hold combat drills over Baltic Sea
Russia has started tactical fighter jet exercises over the Baltic Sea with the goal of testing readiness to perform combat and other special operations, the country's defence ministry has said, a day after Moscow said its jets had scrambled to intercept United Kingdom military planes over the Black Sea. "The main goal of the exercise is to test the readiness of the flight crew to perform combat and special tasks as intended," Russia's defence ministry said on Tuesday. "The crews of the Su-27 [fighter jets] of the Baltic Fleet fired from airborne weapons at cruise missiles and mock enemy aircraft," the ministry announced on the Telegram messaging channel, adding that as well as improving skills, Russian fighter pilots are on "round-the-clock combat duty" guarding the air space of Russia's Kaliningrad exclave. Wedged between Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic coast, Kaliningrad is Moscow's westernmost state and was part of Germany until the end of World War II. Given to the Soviet Union at the Potsdam Conference in 1945, the enclave has roughly 1 million residents – mainly Russians but also a small number of Ukrainians, Poles and Lithuanians.

Russia says British forces blew up Nord Stream; UK denies claim
British navy personnel planted explosives and blew up the Nord Stream gas pipelines last month, Russia's defence ministry says, a claim London called false and designed to distract from Moscow's military failures in Ukraine. Russia did not give evidence for its allegation that a leading NATO member had sabotaged critical Russian infrastructure amid the worst crisis in relations between the West and Moscow since the depths of the Cold War. The Russian ministry alleged "British specialists" from the same unit that directed Ukrainian drone attacks on ships from the Russian Black Sea fleet in Crimea earlier on Saturday were responsible for the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage. "According to available information, representatives of this unit of the British Navy took part in the planning, provision and implementation of a terrorist attack in the Baltic Sea on September 26 this year – blowing up the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines," the ministry said. The United Kingdom denied the accusation.

WWII: Enigma machine used by the Nazis to send secret messages found in the Baltic Sea
Divers recovered the device at the bottom of Gelting Bay, on Germany's northern coast, while working to remove abandoned fishing nets that threaten marine life. Designed shortly after WWI by the engineer Arthur Scherbius for commercial usage, the cipher engine was adopted by many national governments and militaries. The portable device is best-known for its use by the Axis powers to encode military commands, for safe transmission by radio, as part of their rapid'blitzkrieg' strategy. Enigma featured a number of wheels, which together formed an electric circuit that repeatedly scrambled an entered character -- and reconfigured after each letter. German military models -- made more complex through the addition of a plugboard, for added scrambling -- and their codebooks were highly sought by the allies.
